Indigo Hausa
This Hausa cloth (Abakwariga being an alternate name for Hausa) has been
produced using a stitched-raphia resist techique. Much like the Yoruba
adire cloth, a pattern is made by first tying off parts of the cloth
and then the indigo-dyed cloth is stitched with raphia, in this case
forming geometric and zoomorphic motifs. This particular piece is made
up from thirty narrow loom strips, each 7 cm in width. The extended
edge strips on the cloth act as tapes or ties.
